Wollerau is often associated first with taxation. That is understandable, but incomplete. For international entrepreneurs, a location is genuinely attractive only when accessibility, infrastructure, working facilities, authorities, banking environment and quality of life work together. In my view, that combination is the real strength of Wollerau and Canton Schwyz.

Close to Zurich without the logic of a city-centre location

Wollerau lies in the Höfe district on Lake Zurich and is closely connected to the Zurich economic area. For international entrepreneurs this is practical: Zurich, the airport, Pfäffikon, Zug and Central Switzerland are within easy reach, while the immediate environment remains considerably quieter than a city-centre location.

That combination is valuable for many mandates. Not every client needs a prestigious central-city office. Many need a reliable Swiss base where meetings can be held, administration and mail function properly and real work can be performed when required.

A business location should be more than an address

International structures often discuss “substance”. This is not one single characteristic but the totality of the actual circumstances. Where are decisions prepared? Where is the company reachable? Are working facilities available? How are documents, mail and administration organised? Do representation, banking relationships and operations fit the chosen location?

An address alone does not answer these questions. At the same time, substance does not mean every company immediately needs a large office and several employees. The setup should be proportionate to the business model and commercially credible.

Flexible solutions can therefore be sensible: a serious business address, meeting rooms, desks or private offices, combined with mail handling and technical infrastructure. The location can then grow with the business.

The tax advantage is real, but it should be assessed professionally

Canton Schwyz has long been one of Switzerland’s tax-attractive business locations. The canton’s own business promotion emphasises its proximity to the Zurich economic area, skilled workforce and comparatively low corporate and personal tax burden.

Nevertheless, a corporate location should not be selected solely on the basis of one headline tax rate. The effective burden depends on municipality, profit, capital, ownership and other factors. For international entrepreneurs, personal tax residence must also be considered.

Tax is therefore an important part of the location decision, but it works best when combined with a genuine and commercially sensible presence.

Short distances are an underrated business advantage

Complex projects often become more efficient simply because key parties are close and accessible. Banks, fiduciaries, notaries, lawyers, property specialists and authorities do not need to sit in the same building, but they should be reachable and processes should work.

The Lake Zurich, Schwyz, Zug and Zurich area offers a high concentration of specialists. For international mandates this allows banking, corporate law, tax, real estate and implementation to be coordinated within a relatively compact geographic area.

Discretion is not invisibility

Wollerau offers a quiet and discreet environment. This can be attractive to entrepreneurs, family offices and international private clients. Discretion, however, should never be confused with lack of transparency. Banks, authorities and business partners expect clear structures and understandable responsibilities.

Professional discretion means controlling information carefully, managing access properly and involving only those specialists who are genuinely required for a process.

Location decisions should connect several levels

Registered office, personal residence, bank relationship, office, property ownership and operational activity are separate topics, but they influence one another. An entrepreneur can create a tax-efficient structure and still end up with an impractical operating model – or the reverse.

For some businesses Wollerau is an ideal operating base. For others it may be a suitable administrative or holding location while operational activities remain elsewhere.

The best solution is not the one with the strongest single argument. It is the one in which the different parts of the structure fit together.

Why we work from Wollerau ourselves

For Alpine Capital, Wollerau is not simply an address on letterhead. We work here, meet clients, coordinate mandates and connect the location with Alpine Offices and Alpine Properties. The view over Lake Zurich is attractive; more importantly, the location combines professional working conditions, discretion and accessibility.

That is why I recommend that entrepreneurs do not compare locations only in spreadsheets. It is also important to understand how a place works in everyday business and whether it supports the actual operating model.
